The fishing out of Wrightsville Beach continues to remain strong, both inshore and offshore. Red drum both in the creeks as well as the inlets are biting well, with the best bet including soft plastics on jigheads and Carolina rigged finger mullet. There are still plenty of Spanish mackerel and bluefish along the beaches, and can be targeted both trolling Yo Zuri deep divers and clarkspoons. The fish are keyed in on very small bait, and when seen in these schools of bait can be caught on small ½ oz. diamond jigs. The flounder bite is very strong, both inshore and along the nearshore structures. I had the pleasure of taking two young anglers, and although it wasn’t the best conditions, we were able to find a few nice flatties on live bait up to 5 lbs. Offshore, the gag grouper bite is very good. Ledges in the 10-25 mile range have held plenty of fish, with live pinfish being the go to bait. In these same areas….....
king mackerel can be found, with the majority of the action on slow trolled live bait.
There are even a few sailfish to be found inshore of the gulf stream, and we released one this past week that dwarfed the average sail. There are also a few tarpon still moving down the beach, and while hard to target, will take a live bait if your timing is just right. Two beautiful strikes (with unfortunately no hookup) while flounder fishing was a pleasant sight, both on live finger mullet. The gulf stream fishing is still very good with mixed catches of wahoo, mahis and sailfish.
